NHTSA calculated that older Grand Cherokees and Libertys have fatal crash rates double those of similar vehicles - Chevrolet S10 Blazer, Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, Isuzu Rodeo, Isuzu Trooper, Mitsubishi Montero, Suzuki Sidekick and Suzuki XL-7. There were also seven deaths in at least five Liberty crashes. According to the Huffington Post NHTSA found at least 32 rear-impact crashes and fires in Grand Cherokees that caused 44 deaths. Previously Chrysler moved the tanks on the 2005 Grand Cherokee and 2007 Liberty ahead of the rear axle. However, USA TodayJreports that there might not be any real "fix" for the rear mounted fuel tanks other than re-engineering or re-designing. Ditlow says Chrysler could fix the fuel tank problem for about $100 per vehicle. The Center's director, Clarence Ditlow called the gas tank a "terrible design". NHTSA began its investigation in August 2010 at the request of the Center for Auto Safety an advocacy group in Washington, D.C. The vehicles are safe and are not defective, but they will work with the NHTSA to resolve the dispute. On June 5 Chrysler issued a statement that "The company does not agree with NHTSA's conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles. In a roll-over crash, the plastic tank could puncture because it does not have proper fire shielding. In a rear-end crash, this design could make them susceptible to rupture, gasoline spill and fire. These model Jeeps have their gas tanks positioned below the rear bumper and behind the rear axle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requested on Jthat Chrysler recall 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokees 1993 - 2007 and Jeep Liberty sport-utility vehicles 2002 - 2007 according to AP ( Associated Press).
